‘One of the best’… Sam Allardyce has already given Daniel Farke key reason to move for Leeds United target

Sam Allardyce spent a short time at Leeds United, but he already handed over the transfer decision to Daniel Farke this summer.

Allardyce is clearly still impressed with Leeds after his efforts were not enough to keep the Whites in the Premier League.

But years later, Leeds are poised for a return to the big time and Allardyce may have influenced Leeds’ marketing bid.

Farke has decisions to make this summer, with much revolving around Illan Meslier’s future at the club.

Well, Allardyce may have already painted the picture for the Leeds boss after what he said earlier about the transfer target.

When Meslier came under fire, Karl Darlow stepped in and proved his worth.

Of course, this leaves the Frenchman’s future in serious question as Meslier does not want to be Leeds’ back-up.

The former Whites boss apparently took note of the goalkeeping failure, with Allardyce dropping a “very upset” Meslier during his time at the club.

If his opinion of goalkeepers is anything to go by, what he said about Leeds target Sam Johnston in 2020 proves that Farke needs to make a move.

The England international is now on Leeds’ radar and produced a superb performance against Liverpool in 2020 to earn Allardyce’s West Brom a point at Anfield, with the former Leeds boss praising Johnston in his post-match press conference.

“He’s one of the best,” Allardyce said

“I think it’s nice to see because he’s one of the two most important people in your team.

“He’s at the right level up there and yesterday he already saved more shots than anyone.

“We have to keep at it, but know that Sam is there when needed and don’t make him too busy.”

Johnston’s experience will be perfect for Leeds after the Meslier fiasco

The plan Leeds tried when they signed Meslier from Lorient in 2019 was to go for a young up and coming goalkeeper.

That approach didn’t work, of course, as the Frenchman looks set to leave after six seasons.

With that in mind, the 49ers can’t afford to make the same mistake, and picking someone with experience like Johnstone is definitely the way to go.

Judging by West Brom’s relegation this season, it doesn’t reflect too badly on Johnston as Farke’s Leeds are likely to be in the same scenario next season.

One stat that stands out is Johnston’s tall claims while Meslier struggles to control his box.

At 32, Johnstone won’t be a long-term option, but will undoubtedly fill the void left by the unreliable Meslier.
