Sort Codes for All Branches of Nigerian Banks
Sort code is important when transferring money between and within banks.
The top commercial banks in Nigeria are listed below, along with the sort codes for each branch located in each of the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (Abuja).
What is a Sort Code?
Sort Code is a unique identifier used by banks to identify specific branches. It is a 9-digit number, with the first 3 digits representing the bank’s code, the next 3 digits indicating the location of the bank branch, and the last 3 digits representing the branch itself.
This code is essential for various banking operations, including online transfers and receiving payments.
Sort codes vary from bank to bank and even between branches of the same bank. This means that no two branches of the same bank share the same sort code.
However, if they are located in the same states or regions, their first few numbers may be similar.
When a sort code is used in Nigeria, the first 3 digits indicate the bank, which applies to all branches; the second set of 3 digits indicates the bank’s location, which applies to various branches of the same bank within the same state; and the final set of 3 digits indicates the branch, which varies for all branches.
What is My Nigerian Bank Sort Code?
After learning what a sort code is, it makes sense to ask what your own sort code is. Your sort code is based on the branch where you are currently holding your account.
In most cases, you open your account at that branch, but occasionally, you may relocate and transfer your account to another branch, which then becomes the branch where your account is kept. In this case, you will need to begin using the account’s sort code.
For example, if you bank with Access Bank PLC and your account is held at a branch in Lagos, your sort code might be different from someone banking with the same bank but at a branch in Abuja.
The same applies if you live in Port-Harcourt and open an account at the Mgbuoba branch, or if you live in Abuja and open an account at Gwarinpa. This example is applicable to all Nigerian banks and states.
