Bruno Guimaraes delivered a candid message to Newcastle United chiefs after the Magpies qualified for the Champions League.
After pledging his own commitment to the cause by discussing his happiness on Tyneside, the cup winning skipper warned that Newcastle must “improve” ahead of next season and suggested the squad depth was not up to standard. After injuries cut into the squad in the closing stages of the campaign, Newcastle won just two of their last six matches to scrape into the top five by goal difference.
The squad’s health, with injuries to Lewis Hall, Joelinton, Kieran Trippier and Alexander Isak all impacting the squad during the run-in, and was brought up by Bruno after the match. Speaking to Sky Sports after losing to Everton, Bruno said: “We are not the level that I want. I think for next season we are going to need more players to be honest with you.
“I think the squad is a little bit short. “We have seen last season we play Champions League that we lost some players through injury and had players missing for us.
“We have improved our level. But next year is another competition for us.
“We need to work hard after the holiday, but we need to improve.”
“That’s always been my thought and my message on recruitment, really, because you can have a period where you think you’ve got time, but then you can look round very quickly and realise that that time has elapsed and you have missed opportunities that you won’t get again.
“That’s what we’ll be trying, but obviously, the reality of that is it’s not always in your hands. But we’ll be doing our best to do things early.”
