‘Striker’s point of view’: Deeney scolds Sunderland star for ‘awful’ lapse of judgement in tedious Watford draw

One Sunderland man has been given an honest verdict by former Watford striker Troy Deeney.

The Black Cats were held to a 2-2 draw against Tom Cleverley’s Watford, with Sunderland levelling up late on through Dennis Cirkin.

Overall, there were plenty more negatives to speak on in regards to the performance by Regis Le Bris’ side, whose efforts were left way too late to grab a win at the Stadium of Light, with the majority of chances for Sunderland falling in the dying embers.

Substitute Milan Aleksic missed a golden opportunity to send his side into a late lead after being denied by Watford shot-stopper Egil Selvik, whilst French striker Wilson Isidor also found himself one-on-one with the Norwegian, only to be denied his 11th goal of the 2024/25 Championship campaign.

The Sunderland striker’s miss was uncharacteristic, and it has been slated by former Watford man Troy Deeney, who had his say on the golden opportunity.

Former Watford man Troy Deeney slates Wilson Isidor for missed Sunderland opportunity

In the dying minutes of Sunderland’s clash with Watford, the Black Cats found themselves with a massive chance to make it 3-2, and it fell to Isidor, who snatched at the opportunity.

During Sky Sports’ post-match analysis, Deeney had his say on the key moment against his former side, to which he said: “From the striker’s point of view, it is an awful finish as well, who goes with the outside of his foot.”

Per SofaScore, the chance that fell to Isidor held an xG of 0.59, which arguably makes it more difficult to miss than find the back of the net.

Wilson Isidor consistency proves to be stumbling block for Frenchman exceeding potential

There is no doubt that, even after today’s performance, Isidor has succeeded in exceeding all fan expectations after he was signed on loan from Zenit at the start of the 2024/25 Championship campaign.

Nonetheless, there are still creases in his game that need ironing out, and it is proving to be the difference between him becoming a potentially assured 20-goal striker.

On several occasions, Isidor has made no mistake in one-on-one situations, but he has also not been consistent with this, as the clash with Watford showed. If he can work on his composure in these situations and consistently deliver what he was able to against the likes of Middlesbrough, and Hull City earlier on in the campaign, there is no doubt that this will hold him in stead as one of the league’s top forwards.
