‘Can do a little bit of everything’ – Alan Shearer tips Town player for England call

Alan Shearer has claimed that new England boss Thomas Tuchel will be keeping a close eye on Ipswich Town striker Liam Delap.

The 21-year-old has eight goals and two assists to his name in the Premier League this season. It’s his maiden campaign at the level after a handful of loan spells in the Championship.

However, Delap’s physicality and work off the ball has also stood out in the top flight, with Town adamant that he’ll stay in Suffolk this month despite reported from some of the biggest clubs in Europe.

Premier League legend Shearer, who earned 63 caps for England in a glittering career, believes that Delap’s form will have him in contention to feature for the Three Lions soon, revealing how impressed he’s been by the former Manchester City man.

“There’s no doubt that Thomas Tuchel will be having a right good look at him,” he said on Match of the Day 2.

“He can do a little bit of everything. I love his aggression, I love the way he can hold the ball up, I love the way he protects it.

“If defenders want to come in, he can buy a foul. That, to me, is really clever play when your team is under pressure. He’s done that so many times this season.

“As a centre-forward, I always said to myself, ‘you have to be aggressive’. You also have to come off the pitch saying to yourself, ‘have I given the centre-halves a really tough afternoon?’.

“There’s no doubt about it that so many times, including today [v Fulham], he can say yes.

“He’s got eight goals this season and Ipswich have only scored 20 themselves, so that tells you how impressive he’s been.

“You’ve got a really, really confident young footballer who’s only going to get better. As I said, he was a nuisance, he was all over the park, and we’re not blessed in that position with English strikers.”
