Earns more than Cunha: Pereira must ruthlessly sell £80k-p/w Wolves dud who’s “woeful” – opinion

Wolverhampton Wanderers have made only one signing so far in the January transfer window, bringing in Emmanuel Agbadou from Rennes to strengthen Vitor Pereira’s defensive options.

The club came close to signing Manu Silva last week, but the deal collapsed when Benfica swooped in at the last moment.

With just over a week remaining in the winter window, Pereira is likely aiming to secure one or two more signings, particularly given the club’s precarious position near the bottom of the Premier League.

However, Wolves’ main priority for survival is to retain several key players.

One player of interest is left-back Rayan Ait-Nouri, who often attracts attention when the window opens, but it’s Matheus Cunha who has garnered the most interest.

The Brazilian has been one of Wolves’ standout performers this season, and losing him now would almost certainly make their fight for survival much harder.

Cunha has been involved in nearly half of Wolves’ Premier League goals this season, with ten goals and four assists from 21 appearances. Given his vital role in their survival hopes, Pereira faces a tough task keeping him, especially with bigger clubs showing interest, including Nottingham Forest, who are reportedly preparing a club-record bid, and Arsenal.

A £60m offer could be enough to convince Pereira to sell, although it would leave him little time to find a replacement.

Despite the interest, Wolves are not desperate to sell the £60k-per-week forward, especially after bringing in over £90m from player sales last summer.

As for Fabio Silva, currently on loan at Las Palmas, he could be one player Wolves might look to offload.

Atletico Madrid are reportedly monitoring Silva’s performances, having been impressed by his displays in La Liga, including goals against Barcelona and Real Madrid.

Wolves might consider selling Silva, who has failed to live up to his £35m price tag since joining in 2020. Despite some promising loan spells in Belgium and the Netherlands, Silva struggled to make an impact during his time at Molineux and in a short stint with Rangers last season.

Now 22, Silva has regained form at Las Palmas, and with just 18 months left on his contract, Wolves may look to cash in while they can. Selling Silva would not only reduce the wage bill but also free up funds for Pereira to pursue other targets.

Silva’s current £80k-per-week salary is significantly higher than Cunha’s, making his potential departure an attractive option for the club.
