A Rangers legend is at the heart of fresh speculation regarding a potential restructure at Everton.
It has been an emotional month at Goodison Park, with former manager David Moyes returning for a second stint. His primary task is to stabilize the club ahead of their move to a new stadium in Liverpool, while the arrival of new American owners marks the beginning of a new era for the Toffees.
David Weir, currently the technical director at Premier League club Brighton, is a hero at both Everton and Rangers. The former defender spent eight years at Everton, having joined from Hearts in 1999, where he played under Moyes during his first tenure. Weir later concluded his playing career at Rangers, spending five years at Ibrox and winning eight trophies, including three league titles. At 54, Weir transitioned into coaching, first at Everton, then at Sheffield United, before joining Mark Warburton as assistant manager at several clubs, including Rangers.
Weir has been with Brighton since 2019, but according to Alan Nixon, rumors suggest a potential return to Everton. It’s claimed that “Everton’s transfer chief Kevin Thelwell and chief scout Dan Purdy could face the axe from the new American owners,” with the report stating that the new ownership is eager to reshape the club’s operations, and Moyes could play a significant role in this process.
Weir was promoted to technical director at Brighton following Dan Ashworth’s departure from the role, having previously worked as Ashworth’s assistant. Seagulls CEO Paul Barber commented in 2022: “As such, our assistant technical director, David Weir, will now step up and assume the role of acting technical director. He is someone with an excellent knowledge of the role and of our club’s culture from working side-by-side with Dan.”
