Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner has cast doubt on Cheick Doucoure’s readiness to start against Fulham on Saturday, citing concerns over the midfielder’s fitness level.
Doucoure, who recently returned from a toe injury, made his comeback in Palace’s 0-0 draw at Wolves last weekend. However, Glasner insists only players at the peak of their fitness will be considered for the starting lineup.
“We will see,” Glasner said when asked about Doucoure’s availability. “It’s crucial to start with players at their top fitness level. We cannot risk injuries, especially with the congested schedule after the international break.”
Palace are already without suspended Will Hughes, injured Jefferson Lerma and Adam Wharton for the Fulham clash. Glasner’s cautious approach is understandable, given the midfielder’s injury history, including a lengthy layoff due to an Achilles issue last season.
Meanwhile, academy midfielder Justin Devenny has impressed Glasner with his performances in training. The 21-year-old, signed from Airdrieonians in August 2023, boasts 54 senior appearances and shone during Palace’s pre-season tour in the USA.
“Justin was excellent against Wolves and has done well with our U21s,” Glasner noted. “He’s technically gifted, solving situations with ease. We needed midfield reinforcements due to injuries, and he’s a valuable option.”
Devenny’s rise to prominence provides a welcome boost for Palace, who seek to overcome their midfield woes. As Glasner ponders his lineup, Doucoure’s fitness will remain under scrutiny.
Glasner faces a selection dilemma, balancing Doucoure’s readiness with Devenny’s emergence. Will the Palace boss opt for experience or youth against Fulham?
