Tottenham Hotspur have made a key breakthrough in negotiations over personal terms with Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali, moving their summer recruitment plans forward.
The proposed package includes a substantial sign-on bonus and a significant pay rise on his current St James’ Park deal, which would place Tonali among the club’s top earners at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
A major factor behind Tonali’s preference for Spurs is the chance to work with fellow Brescia native Roberto De Zerbi. The pair share a strong tactical connection, and their discussions have fostered an immediate rapport.
After detailed talks about his prospective role, Tonali has given his full backing to the footballing vision laid out for him. Tottenham’s absence from European competition has not deterred his commitment.
However, while personal terms are all but settled, completing the transfer remains a significant challenge, with several top clubs still tracking Tonali closely.
Both Manchester City and Arsenal have shown continued interest in the Italian since the window opened.
Newcastle, meanwhile, are expected to hold out for a premium fee in the region of £100 million before parting with their influential midfielder.
Despite the outside interest, Tottenham’s hierarchy remain calm. They are not concerned about late bids, confident in the agreement already in place with Tonali’s representatives.
Spurs’ recruitment team are now preparing to open formal negotiations with Newcastle’s board over the final transfer fee and structure, cautiously optimistic about sealing what would be a landmark signing.
