Newcastle United may be forced to part ways with midfielder Sandro Tonali this summer, with Tottenham Hotspur emerging as the surprising frontrunners to sign him.
Spurs have seemingly come from nowhere to become serious contenders for the Italian’s services.
While Arsenal and Manchester United have shown inconsistent interest, Tottenham’s pursuit appears more determined, with early indications suggesting genuine belief they can land the 26-year-old.
That said, Tonali won’t come cheap—Newcastle have him under contract until 2030 and are in a strong position to demand a hefty fee.
Agbonlahor questions Tonali’s interest in Spurs move
After finishing 17th in back-to-back Premier League seasons, Tottenham clearly need a rebuild—and they appear to be planning one. But talkSPORT pundit Gabby Agbonlahor isn’t convinced, and doubts Tonali would even consider the move.
“Why would Tonali want to join a team that finished 17th? Spurs aren’t a top-six side anymore—they really aren’t.
Two seasons in a row in that position—I don’t get it. He’s probably telling his agent, ‘Sorry, who’s interested? I thought I’d be joining a big European club with Champions League football. No thanks.’”
Could Spurs bounce back sooner than expected?
Agbonlahor makes a fair point, but there’s reason to believe Roberto De Zerbi could revive Tottenham with the right signings.
A top-six finish might not happen immediately, but adding Tonali alongside targets like Jan Paul Van Hecke, Marcos Senesi, and Andy Robertson—plus a few more—could set them up for a much stronger campaign.
The Premier League has become increasingly unpredictable, so it’s tough to predict any team’s fate with confidence—especially this far out from the new season.
As for Newcastle, how they’ll fare next year is anyone’s guess. With plenty of new faces likely arriving—many of whom fans may not even know yet—the squad could look very different.
