After escaping relegation by the narrowest of margins, Tottenham Hotspur are planning a comprehensive squad overhaul, with Fabrizio Romano delivering a late-night transfer teaser about a new midfield arrival.
Although the summer window hasn’t officially opened, Spurs have already moved quickly to secure two free-agent defenders—Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi—following their departures from Liverpool and Bournemouth at the end of their contracts.
The north London club isn’t stopping there, with further reinforcements targeted at both ends of the pitch in the weeks and months ahead.
Talks are ongoing to bring Brighton’s Jan Paul van Hecke, who previously worked under Roberto De Zerbi at the Amex, into the Italian’s defensive setup—a pursuit that only intensifies speculation that captain Cristian Romero could be heading for the exit this summer.
Tottenham are also pushing to sign winger Savinho from Manchester City, reigniting interest they first showed in the Brazilian a year ago.
While strengthening the defence and attack appears to be the immediate focus before the World Cup kicks off on Thursday, the club’s hierarchy is also monitoring other areas of the squad.
Romano: Tottenham ‘Active’ in Midfield Hunt
Romano recently confirmed that João Palhinha has made joining Tottenham on a permanent deal his priority after spending the season on loan from Bayern Munich.
The Portuguese international enjoys a strong rapport with De Zerbi, who made it clear at the end of the campaign that he wants the 30-year-old to stay after his vital contribution during the run-in.
While Palhinha’s transfer is progressing, Romano has hinted there could be further midfield activity in a late-night YouTube update on Wednesday. The Italian journalist stated: “There are things to clarify on midfielders. For four or five months I’ve been telling you here on my channel that this will be a summer of midfielders.
Man United will be busy, Man City will be busy, Arsenal will be busy. Other clubs too—Tottenham will also be busy with midfielders. Don’t leave Tottenham out of these conversations. There is definitely going to be movement in England around midfielders.”
New Goalkeeper on Spurs’ Radar
Beyond midfield, attack and defence, Tottenham could also look to bring in a new goalkeeper this summer. Guglielmo Vicario had appeared set for a return to Serie A with Inter Milan, but the champions have opted to promote from within rather than invest in a new shot-stopper. Juventus are reportedly interested in the 29-year-old, though they are also targeting Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martínez.
According to TEAMtalk, Spurs are ready to pursue Manchester City’s No.2 James Trafford should Vicario leave the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this summer. Brighton’s Bart Verbruggen—another player familiar with De Zerbi from their time together at the Seagulls—is also a potential target.
