‘Not too bothered’: Celtic’s Johnston cool on Rangers guard of honour question

Alistair Johnston Unfazed by Guard of Honour Talk as Celtic Close in on Title

Alistair Johnston has made it clear that Celtic’s unwavering pursuit of another Scottish Premiership title won’t be distracted—regardless of how Rangers opt to greet them at Ibrox next month.

The Canadian defender left no room for doubt this week, stating that he and his teammates have no intention of dwelling on whether a guard of honour will be offered on derby day. Their sole focus, he said, is ensuring the league trophy finds its way back to the Parkhead trophy room.

Brendan Rodgers’ side are on the brink of clinching a fourth consecutive league title and could seal it before the end of April. A result against Dundee United at Tannadice on April 26 would be enough to guarantee celebrations ahead of their May 4 clash with Rangers.

When questioned about the possibility of a traditional tribute from their rivals, Johnston brushed it aside, stressing that Celtic are too focused on achieving silverware to worry about ceremonial gestures.

“Would I expect it? Not really,” Johnston said, speaking ahead of the launch of voting for Celtic’s Player of the Year awards. “It’s not something we’re too concerned about. What matters most is lifting a trophy on the final day of the season—that’s the goal.”

Johnston, who’s quickly established himself as a key figure under Rodgers during a dominant campaign, said the squad remains laser-focused and uninterested in outside distractions, especially with a potential domestic treble still within reach.

“One thing I’ve learned since arriving here is not to stress over things you can’t control,” he added. “That only leads to unnecessary anxiety and distractions. We just focus on what’s in our hands—and that certainly isn’t.”

Before they can pop the champagne at Tannadice, Celtic face a crucial Scottish Cup semi-final against St Johnstone at Hampden Park this weekend. The dream of another treble is still alive, but the road remains challenging.

“Hopefully we can take care of things at Tannadice,” said Johnston. “Dundee United have had a strong season and their home form’s been impressive. It won’t be easy, but being so close to the title gives us that extra motivation.

“If we can seal it there, we can head to Ibrox and enjoy the game with freedom. But we’ve got some big matches before then.”

Whether or not Rangers offer a guard of honour remains uncertain. What is certain, however, is Johnston’s stance—Celtic’s sights are firmly set on silverware, and nothing will knock them off course.
