Everton must axe £140k-p/w star who should never play at Bramley Moore

Everton are on a seven-match unbeaten streak in the Premier League, a remarkable turnaround that seemed unimaginable when Sean Dyche was sacked after taking the club as far as he could. His tenure helped steer the team through a turbulent period last season, finishing comfortably in 15th despite an eight-point penalty.

Now, with David Moyes back at the helm, the Toffees are looking like a team with a clear sense of purpose, blending their trademark resilience with a more dynamic and exciting style of play. Moyes, a seasoned and pragmatic manager, guided West Ham to a Conference League win, and now Everton are beginning to show signs of improvement.

With a new stadium on the horizon, change is expected this summer. The Friedkin Group, Everton’s owners, have reportedly given Moyes more control over transfers, ensuring the club invests in new signings.

There are several players likely to be moved on, as Moyes looks to stamp his authority on the squad ahead of the club’s move to Bramley Moore. Dominic Calvert-Lewin, in the final months of his contract and struggling with injuries, may be one of those to go. With Beto finding form, a reshuffle in the forward line could be in order.

On the wings, Jack Harrison and Jesper Lindstrom, both on loan and yet to contribute a goal or assist this season, may also be shown the door. Aging players like Idrissa Gueye and Michael Keane, who are nearing the end of their contracts, might also leave, but there’s one more big decision for Moyes to make. The club’s highest earner, Abdoulaye Doucoure, could be on his way out.

Doucoure, 32, has been a consistent performer for Everton, but his £140,000-per-week salary makes his retention a tough call. Despite scoring 20 goals and providing 13 assists in 156 appearances for the club, his impact this season has waned, with only two goals to his name. His contract runs until 2025, but his age and current form may make him an unwise financial commitment as Everton look to move into a new era.

Doucoure’s performances have also dipped statistically, with his win rate in ground duels dropping significantly this season. Under Moyes, he has played a more advanced role, which aligns with his attacking instincts, but as Everton evolve, his £140k weekly wage may no longer be justifiable.

Though Doucoure will always be remembered for his memorable goal against Bournemouth in the final match of the 2022/23 season, a symbol of his contribution to Everton’s survival, the club is now in the midst of a transition. If TFG can’t renegotiate a more affordable contract for him, it may be time for both him and the club to move on and make room for new talent like Charly Alcaraz and Dwight McNeil to thrive.
