Kevin Thelwell is under scrutiny at Everton after the club missed out on a £1.6 million signing to Tottenham.
With the Friedkins taking over as new owners at Goodison, the Director of Football is facing increased pressure, and his job could be on the line.
The 51-year-old’s contract expires at the end of the season [Alan Nixon], and his recent actions are doing little to help his chances of securing a new deal on Merseyside.
Now that Tottenham has completed a transfer after the deadline, the former Wolves employee is feeling even more pressure.
The transfer activity at Everton this winter was likely not enough to support David Moyes, with only Carlos Alcaraz arriving.
However, the Toffees had the chance to sign an exciting young talent that could have alleviated some of the disappointment over a quiet window.
Mason Melia, the 17-year-old wonderkid from St Patrick’s Athletic, had caught the interest of Everton, along with clubs like Manchester City, Celtic, and Bayer Leverkusen [David Sneyd].
Ultimately, Tottenham secured the signing of Melia for an initial £1.6 million from the Irish club.
Given Melia’s high reputation in the League of Ireland, he would have been a valuable addition to the Everton squad.
The frustration with Thelwell stems from the fact that a deal for the highly-rated forward, available for such a modest fee, was never completed.
Realistically, the £1.6 million would have had minimal impact on Everton’s finances, but their failure to act on the opportunity points directly to the Director of Football.
