Leeds United failed to sign any players during the January transfer window, despite strong links to Cameron Archer on deadline day. Ross McCormack believes Leeds missed a significant opportunity.
Daniel Farke had previously highlighted the need for a striker, a no. 10, and a centre-back at the club. As the window neared its end, the priority shifted to securing a new striker after Patrick Bamford was sidelined with injury and Joe Gelhardt joined Hull on loan.
However, no deals were made. Leeds now find themselves short up front with Bamford unavailable due to a hamstring injury, and without sufficient cover for Brenden Aaronson in the no. 10 role, with Aaronson having started 28 consecutive league games.
While Leeds didn’t strengthen their squad, their promotion rivals made major moves. Sheffield United secured seven signings, and Leeds fans were particularly concerned by Sunderland’s acquisition of Enzo Le Fee.
Burnley were also active, signing experienced players like Jonjo Shelvey and Ashley Barnes, as well as bringing in Oliver Sonne, Jaydon Banel, and Marcus Edwards on loan from Sporting Lisbon.
The signing of Edwards is a major coup. Mauricio Pochettino once compared him to Lionel Messi on Sky Sports, and Edwards has impressed at Sporting under Ruben Amorim, making a mark on the European stage.
Scott Parker, Burnley’s manager, played a key role in the move, reuniting with his former Tottenham teammate. Reacting to the news, McCormack said, “Leeds have been caught asleep here. This boy is a serious player.”
Edwards, primarily a winger, could have solved Leeds’ no. 10 dilemma. While he has mainly played on the wing for Spurs’ U21 team and Sporting, his technique and creativity make him capable of playing in a central role.
Burnley, who have struggled to score, will benefit from Edwards’ creativity. Since joining Sporting, he has contributed to 50 goals in 120 games for the Portuguese giants.
Edwards would have been a fantastic addition to Leeds, but Burnley’s acquisition strengthens their chances of returning to the Premier League. Leeds, however, left the window without making any signings. Notably, Burnley has an option to make Edwards’ loan permanent for a reported £8m if they secure promotion, according to Sky Sports on deadline day.
