Striker who scored 163 Premier League goals says Everton were ‘desperate’ to sign him

Everton have missed out on their share of talented players over the years.

Kyle Walker almost signed for Everton before moving to Tottenham from Sheffield United, and Andy Robertson was also on the verge of joining Everton before heading to Liverpool.

However, Robertson isn’t the only Liverpool legend who nearly ended up at Everton.

Speaking on the Say it and Spray it Podcast, Robbie Fowler discussed his early career and revealed that Everton had shown interest in him as a youngster.

Fowler, a lifelong Everton fan, turned down the opportunity to join his boyhood club and instead chose Liverpool, where he had strong connections early on.

Fowler explained the choice he faced: “I was going to go to Everton. People think that because I was an Everton fan, I was definitely going to join them. But I went to Liverpool and never looked back. When you get to about 14, you’re offered the chance to sign schoolboy forms. Everton were desperate to sign me again, but because I had been at Liverpool and knew the staff and players, I made the decision to stay.”

He continued, reflecting on how Liverpool’s coaching staff, including Steve Heighway, Hugh McAuley, and Dave Shannon, played a key role in his decision. “At that point, it was more about my career than being an Everton fan.”

Looking back, it’s clear Everton missed out on a true legend.

Fowler went on to become an iconic figure at Liverpool, earning the nickname “God” at Anfield, while Everton struggled to produce a homegrown striker of his caliber until Wayne Rooney emerged in the early 2000s.

Fowler’s Premier League career was exceptional, and he could have been a major figure at Everton had he chosen differently.

Here are Fowler’s Premier League stats:
Games: 379
Goals: 163
Assists: 39

Unfortunately for Everton, they missed out on a star who would go on to become a legend for their biggest rivals. It’s impossible to say how the rivalry between the two Merseyside clubs would have evolved in the 1990s had Fowler made a different choice, but it remains an intriguing “what if.”
