I’m ready for Leeds United debut – Eddie Howe didn’t want me at Newcastle United

Former Newcastle United midfielder Jonjo Shelvey had been training with Burnley in recent weeks, and at one point, it seemed he would make his debut against Sunderland on Friday. The match ended 0-0, with James Trafford, a reported Newcastle target, saving two penalties to deny Sunderland.

Shelvey has now agreed to a short-term deal with Burnley as they aim for an immediate Premier League return. The 32-year-old’s recent spells at Nottingham Forest and in the Turkish Super Lig were less than impressive, but he is now back in the UK. Following the announcement of his move, Shelvey expressed his desire to help Burnley achieve promotion, recalling his similar ambition during his time at St James’ Park eight years ago.

“It feels amazing to get it done,” Shelvey said. “It’s been quite a long process, but it’s all done now and I’m excited for it. I like the club as a whole. Every time I’ve played against Burnley at Turf Moor, it’s been tough, but now I’m part of the team, and my aim is to help get this club back into the Premier League where it belongs.”

Burnley manager and former Newcastle captain Scott Parker also welcomed Shelvey’s arrival. He said, “It suits both parties right now. Jonjo joined us last week for training, and we instantly saw his quality. He’s been around the game for years and, at 32, he’s still got plenty left to offer. After his time in Turkey, I’ve seen his quality in the few sessions we’ve had together, and I’m confident he’ll make a difference. He brings experience, something to prove, and a new energy to our squad. We’re excited to have him with us, and we’ll get him up to speed quickly to make an impact.”
