Dan Plumley has said it would be surprising if Everton were to spend £40 million on new transfers before the February 3 deadline.
After the Premier League cleared up any doubts regarding the club’s Profitability and Sustainability Regulations (PSR), it was confirmed that the Toffees have room to spend up to £40 million (iNews, 20 January).
Plumley, a football finance expert, believes that while this is good news regarding the PSR, it’s unlikely Everton will spend that amount during the winter transfer window.
“It was always going to be an interesting situation,” he exclusively told Goodison News.
“In the end, it’s up to the ownership group. I’ve always said it’s unlikely that Everton will make big signings in this window.
“The term ‘big’ is subjective depending on what’s spent in the market, and we know that winter windows tend to be quieter compared to the summer.
“It’s an interesting amount, but it really depends on the ownership group’s decisions.”
Plumley added that the PSR situation could give Everton more flexibility, though he remains skeptical about the likelihood of such spending in January.
“If that amount is being mentioned and they do end up spending it, that would reflect where the club is now, especially with the PSR situation settled, allowing the club to move forward, which is great news.”
While David Moyes has enjoyed a strong start to his second spell at the club, with consecutive wins over Tottenham and Brighton, Everton continues to be linked with players. However, Moyes and Kevin Thelwell are likely to act only if a smart opportunity arises.
