Jamie O’Hara has called Everton’s victory over Brighton to close the gap to just a point behind Tottenham in the Premier League table “embarrassing.”
Speaking with Tony Bellew on talkSPORT (25 January, 5:52pm), O’Hara was quick to remind the Toffees fan that, despite the 1-0 win at the Amex Stadium, Everton are still behind Spurs.
With both teams having played 22 matches so far this season and Tottenham yet to feature in matchweek 23, Bellew pointed out the financial differences between the two clubs.
O’Hara responded: “[We’re] still above you in the table, mate.”
Bellew fired back: “That’s getting closer, mate. I mean, you’ve spent about 20 times more money than us, so it doesn’t really add up to much. I don’t know what you’re going to do.”
Jermaine Pennant chimed in: “Only a point in it as well, there’s only a point in it, mate.”
O’Hara’s reply was blunt: “I know, it’s embarrassing.”
Everton edging closer to Premier League safety
While Southampton appear almost certain to be relegated after earning only six points from 23 matches, the battle for Premier League survival remains tight with plenty of twists ahead. However, Everton’s recent resurgence has lifted the spirits of their supporters, and their win over Brighton has moved them seven points clear of the relegation zone.
Despite their narrow 1-0 win at the Amex being somewhat controversial, the Toffees have now won back-to-back matches for the first time this season, giving them a crucial cushion. Their previous victory was a well-earned 3-2 win over O’Hara’s Tottenham at Goodison Park last weekend, which has left Spurs fans increasingly concerned.
With just a point separating the two sides, and Everton potentially able to overtake Spurs with a game in hand, optimism is growing at Goodison Park, marking a welcome change after a long period of struggle.
