Newcastle United have reportedly made a £50m+ offer and triggered the release clause for a “fantastic” midfielder, with Villarreal’s Alex Baena now a primary target.
The Magpies are focusing on strengthening several areas of their squad. In goal, Burnley’s James Trafford has impressed, particularly after saving two penalties against Sunderland on Friday, making him a key target.
Earlier this month, Eddie Howe’s team showed interest in Uzbekistani defender Abdukodir Khusanov, but the player has since moved to Manchester City. As a result, Newcastle are considering alternative center-back options, including AC Milan’s Fikayo Tomori and Sporting CP’s Ousmane Diomande, whom they have scouted recently.
In attack, Howe is still seeking a new striker, especially with Alexander Isak drawing attention from top clubs. PAOK’s Stefanos Tzimas has emerged as a potential target. Regardless of Isak’s future, Howe is keen on adding a quality midfielder, which has led to Newcastle’s move for Baena.
Spanish reports indicate that Newcastle have submitted a €60m (£50.7m) bid, triggering Baena’s release clause. However, competition for the 23-year-old is fierce, with both Nottingham Forest and Bayern Munich also expressing interest.
Baena has been a standout performer in La Liga, contributing 2 goals and 14 assists in 34 appearances last season, and already has 4 goals and 5 assists this term. His versatility in attack, playing across both wings, makes him an exciting prospect for Newcastle. Football talent scout Jacek Kulig praised the Spaniard in September, highlighting his potential.
Newcastle’s move to activate Baena’s release clause is an encouraging development, but securing his signature may prove challenging if Bayern Munich intensify their pursuit, given the lure of Champions League football next season.
