The Premier League issued a statement following the disallowance of a goal by Brighton in their match against Manchester United.

Joao Pedro, who had scored the winning goal when the teams met earlier in the season at the Amex Stadium, thought he had netted again. However, the goal was ruled out after Jan Paul van Hecke was deemed to have fouled Diogo Dalot in the buildup.

“The referee’s decision to award the goal was reviewed by VAR, who identified a foul by van Hecke on Dalot and recommended an on-field review,” the Premier League Match Centre account stated. “The referee then reversed the original decision, and the goal was disallowed.”

The decision sparked criticism, with pundit Richard Keys expressing his displeasure. “They’re having a laugh,” he posted on social media. “What a disgrace disallowing that Brighton goal. Absolute joke. Scandalous.”

At the time, the match was tied 1-1 after Bruno Fernandes equalized from the penalty spot following Yankuba Minteh’s opener for Brighton. Despite the disallowed goal, Brighton regained the lead around the hour mark when Kaoru Mitoma set up Minteh for a second goal.

Joao Pedro’s disallowed goal was not the only one ruled out after a VAR review in Sunday’s Premier League games. Nikola Milenkovic of Nottingham Forest thought he had extended his side’s lead against Southampton to 4-1, only for an offside decision to nullify his effort.

Ahead of the Brighton match, Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim reflected on his side’s nervy win over Southampton, where Amad scored a hat-trick in the final 10 minutes. “The best thing for the players is to stay calm, explain what we need to change, and then we can be angry with them later,” Amorim said. “We didn’t play well today. The first half was tough, and I think some players were tired. When they’re tired, they’re still trying, and it’s my responsibility to help them, sometimes by making changes.”
