Neal Maupay breaks silence to Everton fans after controversial online comments

Neal Maupay has explained why he took to social media to taunt Everton, despite still being technically under contract at Goodison Park.

After Everton’s 2-0 loss to Nottingham Forest in December, the French striker posted on X, “Whenever I’m having a bad day I just check the Everton score and smile.”

Though Maupay is currently on loan at Marseille with an obligation to buy at the end of the season, he made the move to Ligue 1 in the summer after leaving Everton.

In an interview with FootMercato on January 17, Maupay said: “I like to sleep and that’s it. Social media is for everyone, and everyone shares their opinions, including me. Just because I play football doesn’t mean I should hold back. I enjoy making playful jabs like the fans and players do. I’ve always been myself. You think I’m crazy, but don’t you joke around with your friends? I just have a bigger platform. I did it before football, and I’ll keep doing it after.”

Maupay continued, “For some players with fame, it’s hard to be themselves. I prefer to stay true to who I am.”

Maupay has undoubtedly burned his bridges with Everton after this controversial comment, and it seems unlikely he will ever return to the club. His loan deal with Marseille, which includes an obligation to buy, makes it improbable he will return to Merseyside, and that may be for the best.

The striker appears unapologetic about his social media post, which sparked backlash from Everton supporters and even led to criticism from former boxer Tony Bellew. Despite the anger his comments caused, the exact reason behind his decision to provoke the fanbase remains unclear, especially considering that Maupay was never treated poorly by the majority of supporters.

Since joining Everton in a £15 million deal from Brighton in August 2022, Maupay struggled to make an impact, scoring just two goals in 34 appearances.
