Everton eye “creative” Newcastle academy graduate as Moyes’ first signing

Everton are interested in signing Newcastle United’s “creative” midfielder, Sean Longstaff, who recently expressed a desire to feel “valued and appreciated,” according to a new report.

David Moyes will begin his second spell as Everton manager on Wednesday evening, with the Toffees hosting Aston Villa at Goodison Park in the Premier League. Moyes, who previously managed Everton from 2002 to 2013 before moving to Manchester United, was appointed as the club’s new manager last week after the dismissal of Sean Dyche.

Under Dyche, Everton won just three of their 19 Premier League matches, leaving them precariously in 16th place above the relegation zone.

As Moyes aims to strengthen the squad in January, Chronicle Live reports that one potential target is Longstaff, who has had a fluctuating role in Eddie Howe’s side this season, starting eight of their 20 Premier League matches. Described by Howe as “creative” with a “really nice way of linking play,” the 27-year-old is under contract at St. James’ Park until 2026.

In an interview with The i in November, Longstaff hinted at frustration over his role in Howe’s setup, stating that he wants to be “valued and appreciated.” He explained, “A lot of people don’t recognize how we play, what the patterns are, or my role in the team. I might not do the flashy stuff like Bruno [Guimaraes], but there are many ways to help the team win, and my job is to make my teammates flourish and score goals when possible.”
