Chris Wood’s long-awaited new contract with Nottingham Forest appears to be nearing completion following a breakthrough in negotiations.
According to The Mirror, Wood is set to sign the deal later this month, effectively ending the possibility of him leaving on a free transfer when his current contract expires in the summer. This comes after overcoming a previous obstacle in talks.
Wood, who is Forest’s top scorer this season with 12 goals, had sought a two-year extension at the City Ground. However, it now seems an agreement has been reached for a 12-month contract, with an option for a further year.
The club’s hesitation to offer a longer deal may be linked to Wood’s age, as he is now 33. Nevertheless, he is enjoying the best form of his career, having scored 14 goals last season to match his personal best in the Premier League. With just three more goals needed in the remaining 18 games this season, he could surpass that tally.
Wood’s goals have been crucial to Forest’s rise to third place in the league and their potential push for a Champions League spot. No other player in the squad has scored more than four goals.
His form has also attracted interest from clubs overseas, including from Saudi Arabia and MLS. However, despite the prolonged contract discussions, Wood has shown no intention of leaving Forest this summer.
The striker has expressed his desire to continue playing in the Premier League for as long as possible and aims to play until he is at least 38. This would include representing New Zealand in two more World Cups, one next year in North America and another in 2030.
