Newcastle United goalkeeper Martin Dubravka bid an emotional farewell to fans following their 2-0 win over Arsenal in the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final.
Despite a reported agreement for the 35-year-old to move to Saudi Arabian side Al-Shabab, his future at the club remains uncertain, as manager Eddie Howe appears hesitant to approve the transfer. Dubravka, who has served as a reliable backup to first-choice keeper Nick Pope, was expected to join Al-Shabab after the crucial semi-final match. It has been reported that the deal was delayed earlier in the window to ensure he was available for the game.
Howe acknowledged that he did not want to lose Dubravka. Speaking after the match, Howe initially refrained from commenting on the goalkeeper’s emotional gesture but later expressed his desire to retain him at the club.
“We’ve been preparing for this game with Martin. He’s playing very well at the moment and, of course, I wouldn’t want to lose him,” Howe said. He added that discussions would take place with director of football Paul Mitchell about Dubravka’s future: “I know nothing, genuinely. I’ve been head down into the game, so I’m sure I’ll speak to Paul at some stage today.”
Howe also revealed that he would like Dubravka to not only stay for the remainder of the season but also sign a new contract: “That would be my wish,” he said.
Newcastle’s willingness to part with Dubravka appears to stem from the club’s efforts to adhere to the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules. Financial restrictions have limited the club’s spending, prompting the need to offload players, even against the manager’s wishes.
Dubravka is not the only player whose future is in doubt, with Kieran Trippier also reportedly facing the prospect of departure. However, Howe, who considers Trippier a key player, is again said to be at odds with the club’s hierarchy on this matter.
While Dubravka’s move to Al-Shabab seemed imminent, Howe’s determination to keep him could prevent the transfer. As Newcastle competes across multiple fronts this season, Howe’s desire for squad stability may clash with the club’s financial constraints.
