Leeds United have once again been linked with a move for Tottenham’s Ben Davies, but Ange Postecoglou’s use of Archie Gray suggests the deal is unlikely.
After the playoff final in the summer, Daniel Farke had to let go of several first-team players, including Archie Gray, who joined Tottenham.
Since his move, Gray has seen his stock rise in North London with several impressive performances at just 18 years old, although he hasn’t featured much in central midfield.
Journalist Ben Jacobs recently revealed that Leeds are still interested in signing Davies from Tottenham this month. Speaking on Last Word on Spurs, Jacobs mentioned:
“With Ben Davies, I think he will also be leaving. Same for Fraser Forster. The most likely scenario for Davies is that he runs down his contract. Leeds remain interested, so that’s one to watch. But with Kinsky’s arrival, Forster drops down the pecking order.”
However, the rise of Archie Gray at Spurs strongly suggests that Ben Davies will not be leaving the club at this time.
Davies, a versatile defender capable of playing both left-back and centre-back, has been sidelined for the last six Premier League matches due to a hamstring injury. With other key players like Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero also injured, Davies’ absence has forced Gray into regular Premier League starts at centre-back, most recently alongside Djed Spence, another former Leeds player.
Postecoglou’s squad is currently thin on centre-back options, and with the second half of the season looming, he’ll need greater depth. As such, Tottenham cannot afford to lose any defenders at this moment, especially someone as versatile as Davies.
Leeds’ interest in the Welsh international dates back to January 2024, but for now, a move for Davies appears unlikely this window. A potential summer transfer makes more sense when he’s recovered from injury and closer to the end of his contract. However, Postecoglou and Daniel Levy are unlikely to consider any defender departures unless they have replacements lined up.
