Ruben Amorim Explain Decision To Start Flop of the Season Against Everton

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has revealed why he has chosen to start Joshua Zirkzee against Everton, despite Rasmus Hojlund’s impressive form.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Amorim explained that Zirkzee’s technical ability makes him the ideal choice to face the Toffees. “He is a talented player,” Amorim said. “He is a Manchester United player and I think he’s ready [to play] that position. I think we need the characteristics of Josh in this game; they [Everton] have two centre-backs who are strong in the air and I want [someone] more technical who can reach the ball in different areas.”

Zirkzee has struggled to find his form since joining United in the summer, scoring just once in 18 appearances. However, Amorim is confident that the 23-year-old has the ability to make a significant impact against Everton. “It’s just an idea, let’s see the result,” he added.

The decision to start Zirkzee ahead of Hojlund may raise some eyebrows, particularly given the Danish striker’s impressive performance in the 3-2 win over Bodo/Glimt in midweek. However, Amorim is adamant that his team selection is based on the specific needs of the game against Everton.

Everton are currently three points above the relegation zone, and a win against United could see them leapfrog West Ham into 14th place. United, on the other hand, are looking to build on their recent win over Bodo/Glimt and climb into the top half of the Premier League table.

“We didn’t have a lot of time to prepare for this game, but we are ready,” Amorim said. “We have fresh legs, fresh minds, and we are prepared to win the game.”
