Leicester City’s protracted search for a new manager has encountered another obstacle, with Middlesbrough boss Michael Carrick emerging as an unlikely candidate to succeed Steve Cooper.
Carrick, a former Manchester United midfielder, has been garnering attention for his impressive work at the Riverside Stadium, guiding Middlesbrough to a promising start in the Championship. His attacking brand of football, which has yielded 25 goals in 15 league matches, had seemingly caught the eye of Leicester’s hierarchy.
However, according to Teesside Live, sources close to Middlesbrough have categorically ruled out the possibility of Carrick departing for the King Power Stadium. The report suggests that while Leicester have been monitoring Carrick’s progress, no official approach has been made, and the Boro boss is unlikely to be tempted by the Foxes’ overtures.
“It’s no surprise that Michael Carrick is being linked with other jobs,” said former Leicester City player, Steve Walsh. “He’s done a fantastic job at Middlesbrough, and his style of play is very attractive. However, it’s clear that he’s committed to the project at Boro, and I don’t think he’ll be leaving anytime soon.”
This development represents a significant setback for Leicester, who are growing increasingly desperate to appoint a suitable replacement for Cooper. The former Swansea City and Nottingham Forest manager was relieved of his duties on Sunday evening, following a dismal start to the 2024/25 campaign.
“We need to find someone who can come in and make an immediate impact,” said Leicester City legend, Gary Lineker. “We can’t afford to wait around for someone to settle in. We need someone who can hit the ground running and get us back on track.”
With Carrick joining Graham Potter and David Moyes in being ruled out of contention, Leicester’s options are dwindling rapidly. The club has reportedly approached Ruud van Nistelrooy, but the Dutchman’s appointment is far from certain, with Hamburger SV also vying for his services.
“Ruud van Nistelrooy would be a great appointment for Leicester City,” said football pundit, Jamie Redknapp. “He’s got a wealth of experience, and his playing style is very similar to what Leicester City fans want to see. However, it’s clear that he’s got other options on the table, and Leicester will have to work hard to convince him to join.”
Carlos Corberan, the West Bromwich Albion manager, is another name being mooted as a potential candidate. While his style of play may not be the most exhilarating, Corberan’s ability to transform the Baggies into promotion contenders cannot be overstated.
“Carlos Corberan is a very underrated manager,” said football analyst, Alan Smith. “He’s done a fantastic job at West Bromwich Albion, and his teams are always very well organized. He might not be the most glamorous appointment, but he’s definitely someone who could come in and make a positive impact.”
As the managerial merry-go-round continues to spin, Leicester’s fans are growing increasingly restless. The club’s hierarchy must act swiftly to appoint a suitable replacement for Cooper, lest they risk being embroiled in a relegation dogfight.
“The next few days are going to be crucial for Leicester City,” said football commentator, Ian Darke. “They need to find someone who can come in and stabilize the ship. If they can do that, then they might just be able to turn their season around.”
