‘Sleeping giant’… Leeds United told to hire ‘Bielsa-like’ manager if they get promoted to the Premier League

Leeds United may consider Daniel Farke’s future, even if his side gain promotion this season.

It’s been a whirlwind campaign in the Championship, and Leeds will feel that if promotion isn’t secured, it’s a major failure.

Farke is now on his second chance after their playoff final defeat to Southampton last year, as the Leeds boss has increased pressure on his position ahead of the run-in.

Doubt has been cast over Farke’s future, but if he gets the job done and Leeds make the step back up, the 49ers can plan for the future under the German.

However, an iconic manager has now been included in the frame, and it would be hard for Leeds fans to say no.

Jose Mourinho mooted to join ‘sleeping giant’ in Leeds United

Of course, if Leeds don’t reach their goal this season, the owners 2ould likely feel they’ve given Farke enough opportunities.

Even though this is a possibility, Farke clearly loves Leeds and will do anything to get the Whites back in the top flight.

Unfortunately for him, Leeds is a sought-after job, as there is no denying they’re one of the bigger clubs in England.

Leeds snubbed the likes of Steven Gerrard for Farke, but another manager that has been mooted is in the Marcelo Bielsa bracket.

Speaking on talkSPORT (04/04/25), Andy Goldstein has made the incredible suggestion that Jose Mourinho would be the ideal candidate if the Whites were to play Premier League football again.

“If Leeds come up to the Premier League, we came up with an unbelievable fit for who their manager should be. It’s Jose Mourinho,” Goldstein said.

“Everyone hates Leeds, and everyone hates Jose. Jose needs to go to a sleeping giant, a big club. They would adore Jose, he’s Bielsa-like.

“If you’re coming back into the Premier League, you’d have to be an evil owner to say, ‘Thanks for getting us up, thanks for making us like £200m, but we’re going to let you go.’ Awful.”

What Mourinho has said about taking on a club like Leeds

With all the factors considered, this seems like an extremely unlikely prospect.

Mourinho looks settled in Turkey with Fenerbahce, whereas if Leeds did get promoted, the 49ers would no doubt stick with Farke to lead them on in the Premier League.

But Farke’s exit could still happen even with promotion, and as much as the Leeds boss will succeed with a top-two finish, the idea of Mourinho will give fans a remarkable feeling.

Well, Mourinho has previously hindered at taking over a Leeds-like club in the future, speaking in October in a press conference for Fenerbahce’s meeting with Manchester United.

“I think the best thing I have to do is when I leave Fenerbahce, I go to a club that doesn’t play UEFA competitions,” Mourinho said.

“So, if any club in England from the bottom of the table needs a coach in two years, I am ready to go, and I don’t want to say anything more about it.”

The timing could line up perfectly, and maybe Mourinho going to Leeds isn’t an absurd shout after all.
