IAN WRIGHT SLAMS “HARSH” RED CARD DECISION AS CARLOS BALEBA SEES RED AT BOURNEMOUTH

Arsenal legend Ian Wright has weighed in on the controversy surrounding Carlos Baleba’s red card in Brighton’s 2-1 win at Bournemouth on Saturday.

Baleba received two yellow cards, the second of which was widely debated among fans and pundits. Wright, who was working as a pundit for BBC Sport, felt that the decision was harsh and that Baleba was unlucky to be given his marching orders.

“I think it’s a harsh decision,” Wright said. “I don’t think it’s a yellow card, let alone a red card. Baleba’s not even looking at the player, he’s just trying to get the ball. I think the referee’s got it wrong.”

Wright’s comments were echoed by Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler, who was also left fuming by the decision. “It’s unbelievable, it’s not a foul, it’s not a yellow card,” Hurzeler said. “The first one was a clear yellow, but the second one, no chance.”

The red card means Baleba will miss Brighton’s next match against Southampton on Friday, November 29. Wright felt that the decision was not only harsh on Baleba, but also on Brighton, who will now have to navigate their next match without one of their key players.

“It’s a big blow for Brighton,” Wright said. “Baleba’s a key player for them, and to lose him for the next match is a big setback. I think the referee’s decision has had a big impact on the game, and it’s not fair on Brighton.”

Despite the controversy, Brighton secured a hard-fought win at Bournemouth, with goals from Alexis Mac Allister and Evan Ferguson. The victory leaves Brighton level on points with third-placed Chelsea and just one point behind second-placed Manchester City.

Wright praised Brighton’s resilience and determination, particularly after Baleba’s red card. “Brighton showed great spirit to win the game after going down to 10 men,” Wright said. “They deserved the win, and it’s a great result for them.”
