Palace Table £20m+ Bid for Sunderland’s Teen Sensation Chris Rigg
Crystal Palace are plotting an ambitious January swoop for Sunderland’s 17-year-old midfielder Chris Rigg, amidst their injury crisis.
According to sources, Palace’s sporting director Dougie Freedman is leading the charge for Rigg’s signature, with a £20m+ offer potentially on the table.
The Eagles’ interest in Rigg comes as they navigate a challenging period, with key players Eberechi Eze, Adam Wharton, Jefferson Lerma, and Eddie Nketiah sidelined.
Rigg, dubbed “special” by Sunderland pundit Dougie Critchley, has impressed in the Championship with six goals in 39 appearances. Palace’s scouting team has conducted extensive assessments, convincing Freedman of Rigg’s Premier League potential.
“Chris Rigg is a phenomenal talent,” said Critchley. “His vision, passing range, and goal-scoring ability are rare for a player of his age.”
Despite Rigg signing a contract extension until 2027, Palace’s offer could test Sunderland’s resolve. The Black Cats value Rigg highly, but the reported valuation may be too enticing to resist.
“Palace’s interest is no surprise,” said former Sunderland midfielder, Grant Leadbitter. “Rigg’s quality is evident, and he’d thrive in the Premier League. Sunderland must weigh the benefits of selling against Rigg’s long-term potential.”
A successful bid would mirror Palace’s January signing of Adam Wharton from Blackburn. With Rigg’s future hanging in the balance, Sunderland face a crucial decision.
Will Palace secure Rigg’s signature, or will Sunderland resist the Eagles’ advances? Only time will tell.
