Tottenham Hotspur have received fresh encouragement in their pursuit of Liverpool winger Cody Gakpo, with reports suggesting the Reds are open to selling the Dutch international if the right offer arrives this summer.
Gakpo joined Liverpool from PSV Eindhoven in January 2023 in a deal worth up to £44.3 million and has produced 73 goal contributions — 50 goals and 23 assists — in 180 appearances for the club.
Despite those impressive numbers, the 27-year-old struggled to consistently impress during the 2025/26 campaign, leading to criticism from sections of the Liverpool fanbase. Many supporters questioned why he continued to start ahead of highly-rated youngster Rio Ngumoha under former manager Arne Slot.
His inconsistent season has fuelled speculation over a possible departure, with Tottenham emerging as one of the clubs showing serious interest as Roberto De Zerbi looks to strengthen the left side of his attack.
Journalist Graeme Bailey recently revealed that discussions have already taken place between Tottenham and Liverpool regarding a potential transfer. Meanwhile, BBC Sport’s Aadam Patel claims any deal for Gakpo is expected to cost more than £60 million, with Liverpool likely valuing him alongside recent high-profile winger transfers.
For now, Gakpo has refused to discuss his club future, choosing instead to focus on helping the Netherlands at the World Cup. However, he admitted he enjoys having greater “freedom” when playing for his national team, although he deliberately avoided expanding on those comments.
Liverpool reporter Dave Lynch has also suggested the club’s owners, FSG, would not block Gakpo’s exit if a suitable bid arrives. While the Dutchman has not requested a transfer, Lynch was surprised to learn Liverpool are genuinely prepared to consider offers.
“I really didn’t expect it,” Lynch admitted. “I thought they’d give him another season, but it seems they’re open to selling if the right proposal comes in.”
He stressed that Gakpo remains fully focused on the World Cup and has not pushed for a move, although interest from several clubs could change the situation once the tournament ends.
Should Liverpool cash in on Gakpo, Lynch believes Paris Saint-Germain winger Bradley Barcola could become a leading replacement. The French international has reportedly stalled on contract talks with PSG, potentially opening the door for a move.
Lynch explained that several factors would need to align before such a transfer could happen, including Liverpool accepting an offer for Gakpo and PSG being willing to negotiate Barcola’s departure.
However, not everyone expects Gakpo to leave. The Athletic’s James Pearce maintains the winger is likely to remain at Anfield, with new manager Andoni Iraola hoping to begin next season with Gakpo, Rio Ngumoha, new signing Victor Munoz and top target Yan Diomande as his main wide attacking options.
