Tottenham’s summer spending spree shows no signs of slowing down, with the club now on the verge of securing their fifth new arrival of the transfer window.
The North London side have already been active in reshaping their squad, bringing in free agents Marcos Senesi and Andy Robertson as their first two acquisitions. They followed that up with the £52 million signing of Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton, while Martin Dubravka recently joined from Burnley to add depth between the posts.
Although these moves represent significant progress in Tottenham’s squad overhaul, the club remains eager to push forward and complete the remaining pieces of their summer plan as quickly as possible.
Tottenham Agree Terms for Mateus Fernandes
Midfield is next on Tottenham’s agenda, and they’ve identified several targets capable of elevating the quality in that area of the pitch.
One high-profile option is Sandro Tonali of Newcastle, with the two clubs already in contact over a potential £100 million deal. But the Italian isn’t the only name on their radar—Tottenham have also been tracking West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes over recent weeks.
The 21-year-old has attracted interest from a host of Europe’s elite, including Manchester United, Real Madrid, and Arsenal. However, it appears Spurs have stolen a march on their competitors. According to freegard media, Tottenham have now reached a verbal agreement with West Ham for the Portuguese midfielder.
That places Daniel Levy’s side in pole position to land Fernandes, who was recently valued at around £80 million by the Hammers. While it’s unclear whether that figure matches the terms agreed between the two London clubs, the development puts Tottenham in a strong position heading into the summer.
Could Tottenham Also Land Tonali?
Securing Fernandes would be a significant coup given the level of competition for his signature. The young midfielder offers a well-rounded skill set and substantial room for growth, though some may question whether he alone can provide the immediate upgrade Tottenham need.
That’s where a move for Tonali could prove decisive. At 26, the Italian international is approaching his prime and brings proven quality to the table. His defensive discipline, combined with composure and creativity in possession, would add a new dimension to Spurs’ midfield.
The bigger challenge, however, is financial. Signing both players could cost Tottenham in the region of £180 million—a hefty outlay for any club, particularly one not competing in the Champions League.
Still, if player sales can help offset the expense, bringing in both Fernandes and Tonali could have an instant and transformative impact on the squad ahead of next season.
