Rangers Weigh Up Cut-Price Move for Besiktas Winger Vaclav Cerny
Rangers are giving serious consideration to re-signing Besiktas winger Vaclav Cerny this summer—provided they can secure him at a reduced fee, sources have told Football Insider.
The Turkish club are eager to recoup the £6 million they paid Wolfsburg for the 28-year-old and may even hold out for a small profit. At that price, however, a deal is described as “difficult” for Rangers to pull off. Still, the Ibrox side plan to keep a close watch on his situation in the weeks ahead.
Cerny’s age presents a sticking point, as he does not align with Rangers’ new recruitment strategy focused on signing players with future resale value. Nonetheless, the club are prepared to make an exception should a bargain opportunity emerge.
The winger remains a popular figure among the support following an impressive loan spell during the 2024-25 season, during which he registered 18 goals and nine assists. That campaign also saw him play a key role in Rangers’ run to the Europa League quarter-finals, netting six times in 12 European outings and adding a further 12 strikes in the Scottish Premiership.
Cerny has continued to showcase his creative output at Besiktas in the 2025-26 season, contributing 15 goal involvements across 34 appearances. While the Turkish outfit are open to a sale this summer, they will only sanction a departure if their valuation is met.
Rangers are reluctant to meet the full £6 million asking price for a player of Cerny’s age, but are ready to act quickly if Besiktas soften their stance. The club’s new ownership under the 49ers are prepared to make significant funds available for squad reinforcement, though the priority remains investing in younger talents with long-term potential.
Goalkeeper Situation Also on the Agenda
Separately, former Aberdeen chief executive Keith Wyness told Football Insider last week that he expects Sunderland goalkeeper Anthony Patterson to join Rangers this summer—though he cautioned that the current £8 million asking price may prove prohibitive.
Wyness believes Patterson is the “right man” to succeed Jack Butland between the posts, but suggested a deal might only be feasible at an initial £5 million plus add-ons. With interest also coming from south of the border, Rangers may face a battle to land their target even at a reduced fee.
