Tottenham Hotspur remain determined in their pursuit of Sandro Tonali, with fresh reports from Italy claiming the Newcastle United midfielder has already made up his mind about a potential move to North London this summer.
Spurs have been strongly linked with the Italy international throughout the transfer window, although their opening £75 million offer was swiftly rejected by Newcastle. A follow-up proposal reportedly failed to improve on the initial bid, leading to another immediate rejection from the Magpies.
Despite those setbacks, Tottenham have not given up hope. Reports suggest the club are preparing a fresh offer, while Newcastle are believed to value Tonali at around £100 million before they would consider approving a transfer.
According to Sky Sports Italy, Tonali has already agreed personal terms with Tottenham and is ready to complete the move if the two clubs can reach an agreement. Italian journalist Alfredo Pedullà claims the 26-year-old is set for a significant salary increase, with his annual earnings expected to rise from approximately £8 million at Newcastle to between £12 million and £13 million if he joins Spurs.
The main obstacle remains the transfer fee. Tottenham are reportedly willing to increase their offer to around £85 million plus performance-related add-ons, a package they hope will be enough to convince Newcastle to negotiate.
However, Spurs face stiff competition for Tonali’s signature. Manchester City are also monitoring the midfielder closely as they continue strengthening their squad, despite progressing with a separate deal for Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson. Manchester United and Arsenal have likewise been credited with an interest in the Italian international.
Even so, reports from Italy suggest Tonali has already given his commitment to fellow Italian Roberto De Zerbi, expressing his intention to join Tottenham this summer. Speaking on his Caffè di Marzio podcast, respected transfer expert Gianluca Di Marzio claimed Tonali is determined to honour the promise he made to De Zerbi.
Tottenham’s ambition in the transfer market has been evident throughout the summer. The club have already secured four additions to De Zerbi’s squad, with Martin Dúbravka, Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi arriving on free transfers, while Jan Paul van Hecke joined in a deal worth £52 million.
The North London club are also working on other high-profile targets as they look to make another major statement before the transfer window closes.
Alongside their pursuit of Tonali, Spurs are reportedly in discussions over a move for West Ham star Mateus Fernandes, whose valuation is believed to exceed £80 million. Should both transfers be completed, each would surpass Tottenham’s current club-record transfer fee.
