Ally McCoist has expressed his joy at seeing his former Rangers teammate Derek McInnes appointed as the new manager of the Ibrox club.
Rangers officially announced McInnes’ arrival earlier this week, following a swift decision-making process led by Andrew Cavenagh and his team.
Once it became clear that Danny Rohl was open to a move to RB Salzburg, the Gers acted quickly, drawing up a four-man shortlist. McInnes was their top choice, and unlike the previous managerial search to replace Russell Martin, Rangers secured their primary target without significant complications.
While the club’s overall transfer strategy is expected to remain largely unchanged under McInnes, the former Hearts boss is set to have a greater say in behind-the-scenes decisions than Rohl would have.
McCoist has now elaborated on why he believes McInnes is the ideal candidate to lead Rangers forward.

McInnes enjoyed an outstanding campaign with Hearts last season, coming agonizingly close to breaking the Old Firm’s grip on the Scottish Premiership.
After his move to Ibrox was confirmed, the 54-year-old penned a farewell message to Hearts fans, suggesting that controversial refereeing decisions may have ultimately cost his side the title.
While most Rangers supporters have welcomed McInnes’ appointment, some critics have pointed to his lack of major silverware in recent years. McCoist, however, is convinced the timing is perfect for both club and manager.
Speaking to the Scottish Sun, McCoist said: “I’ve spoken to him, and I couldn’t be happier or prouder. Derek is a smart guy. He’s a manager in his own right, but he’s also learned from some of the best in the business.
He has direct access to Sir Alex Ferguson, which is invaluable. This is a win-win for everyone involved—and that’s no slight on Rohl. For me, it was a no-brainer.”
Though McInnes has worked alongside elite managers and delivered a strong season last year, some Ibrox faithful will likely reserve full judgment until they see results on the pitch.
Which players could benefit from a fresh start under McInnes?
Rangers fans are eager to see what tactical system McInnes will implement, having favoured a 4-4-2 formation at Hearts.
While that setup served the Jambos well, Rangers primarily used a 4-2-3-1 system under two different managers last season—so a shift could offer a welcome change.
That adjustment may hand Bojan Miovski a lifeline, given McInnes’ preference for a two-striker partnership. Oliver Antman, who has struggled to make an impact since arriving last summer, could also see renewed opportunities.
Meanwhile, Connor Barron is likely to receive a significant chance to impress during pre-season, after an injury setback cost him his place in the squad last term.
