Alan Shearer has pointed to two factors that might make Sandro Tonali consider swapping Newcastle United for Tottenham Hotspur this summer—though he admits he’d be taken aback if the move actually materializes.
Spurs are pushing hard to reinforce their midfield and have set their sights on Tonali. News broke last week that Tottenham had joined the chase, alongside Arsenal and Manchester City.
They moved quickly, tabling an £80 million offer, but Newcastle promptly turned it down, holding out for a £100 million valuation.
Shearer doubts Tonali to Spurs would make sense
According to Spurs Web, Tottenham are prepared to go to great lengths to outmaneuver their rivals and land the Italian.
But Magpies icon Shearer isn’t convinced. In conversation with Betfair, he acknowledged that London’s appeal and the fresh start under a new manager could draw Tonali—yet he questioned the logic given Spurs’ recent form.
“Tottenham just avoided relegation. I get the attraction of London but going to Spurs who have finished so low over the last two years would be a surprise career move for Tonali in my eyes,” Shearer said.
He added: “But I’m not surprised if it’s true that he’s made an indication that he wants to leave Newcastle. Again, if he doesn’t want to be there, you put the price you want and if someone wants to pay it. It looks as if it’ll have to be three figures, then you say thank you very much, get the £100 million plus and you move on.
“I know Spurs have a new manager and that may be a pull for him, London, obviously. But in terms of the football club, look where they have finished the last two years.”
Why Spurs still hold appeal despite tough times
Even with a couple of rocky seasons, Tottenham remain a compelling prospect for many players. Their facilities are among the best in the country, highlighted by the world-class Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. They also ended their trophy drought in 2024-25 by lifting the Europa League.
Looking further back, Spurs have challenged for the Premier League title and reached a Champions League final within the last decade. Recent struggles owe much to poor managerial choices, but if the club stay true to their “all in” pledge, a return to the top tier may not be far off.
