Fabrizio Romano: Tottenham Hotspur can sign Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United – on one condition

Newcastle United Transfer News: Tonali Attracts Tottenham Interest

This week, speculation has intensified linking Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali with a summer switch to Tottenham Hotspur. According to transfer insider Fabrizio Romano, the Italian international is personally eager to make the move to North London.

Spurs have accelerated their transfer plans following a dramatic escape from Premier League relegation on the final day of the 2025/26 season, which came at the expense of West Ham United. Despite securing back-to-back 17th-place finishes and missing out on European competition, the club is preparing for an ambitious summer overhaul under manager Roberto De Zerbi.

Tottenham have already moved to bolster their defense, reportedly agreeing a £52million deal for Brighton & Hove Albion’s Jan Paul van Hecke. Now, they are setting their sights on another established Premier League talent in Tonali.

Romano has revealed that Tonali has expressed a clear desire to join Spurs, following discussions between the London club and his representatives. However, no formal bid has yet been submitted to Newcastle.

NewcastleWorld understands that the 26-year-old is open to leaving St. James’ Park this summer, with a preference for relocating to the capital. Arsenal have also been mentioned as potential suitors for the midfielder.

Romano Provides Insight on Tonali Negotiations

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano indicated that personal terms would not be a stumbling block for Tonali, though the final outcome hinges on Newcastle’s valuation.

“Tottenham are in direct contact with Sandro Tonali’s camp,” Romano stated. “The player wants the move, and I don’t foresee any financial or contractual issues. His connection with De Zerbi is strong—both hail from Brescia—so that relationship is a key factor.

“It’s also important to note that Tottenham will soon make formal contact with Newcastle to begin negotiations. The price will be the decisive factor. My expectation is that Newcastle’s initial asking price could be around €100million [£86.5million], possibly higher, and then talks will follow.

“De Zerbi is actively pushing for this deal, so now we wait for the club-to-club dialogue, but Tottenham are firmly in the race.”

If any club tables an offer exceeding £85million this summer, Newcastle are reportedly prepared not to block Tonali’s departure.
