HARGREAVES PRAISES THREE ‘BRILLIANT’ UNITED PLAYERS WHO DESTROYED NEWCASTLE — AND CALLS OUT THREE TO BE DROPPED AT ST JAMES’ PARK

Some matches do more than hand out points; they hand out judgment. On Boxing Day, Newcastle United were made painfully aware of this as Manchester United’s tactical mastery and individual brilliance exposed a side in disarray. For fans, it was more than defeat — it was a public humiliation.

Owen Hargreaves did not mince words. While lauding the outstanding performances of Ayden Heaven, Lisandro Martínez, and Senne Lammens, he also delivered a brutal assessment of Newcastle’s underwhelming showing, naming three players who, in his eyes, failed so spectacularly that they deserved to be dropped.

“Massive,” Hargreaves said of United’s defensive trio.
“Ayden Heaven, Lisandro Martínez, and Lammens were terrific. They made Newcastle look small. Every move, every attack, was anticipated and shut down.”

But the sting was in the criticism. Hargreaves singled out three Magpies for their catastrophic day: Bruno Guimaraes, who struggled to influence the game despite being central to Newcastle’s midfield; J Murphy, whose movement was uninspired; and J Ramsey, whose defensive lapses invited constant pressure.

“Those three have to be dropped,” Hargreaves added.
“It was that bad. You can’t compete at this level with that kind of performance. Newcastle have to rethink selections if they want to avoid being embarrassed again.”

The result was a 1–0 defeat courtesy of Patrick Dorgu’s sensational volley, but the narrative extended far beyond the scoreline. Newcastle dominated possession in the second half, yet lacked cohesion, clarity, and impact. Every attempt to penetrate United’s defensive lines was smothered; every error punished.

Hargreaves’ words left fans with little comfort. While United’s brilliance was celebrated, Newcastle’s weaknesses were laid bare for all to see. The lesson was sharp and unflinching: brilliance meets indiscipline and complacency with humiliation, and certain performances simply cannot be tolerated.

For Newcastle supporters, the match will linger as a reminder of vulnerability. And Hargreaves’ verdict? Clear, cutting, and impossible to ignore: three Magpies must face consequences, or risk further exposure on the biggest stages.

“If you’re serious about competing at this level,” he concluded, “you can’t carry performances like that. Dropping these three isn’t harsh — it’s necessary.”
