‘Really well’: Archie Gray pays huge compliment to Leeds United after his first season at Spurs

Archie Gray’s Rise: From Leeds United to Champions League Football with Spurs

Last summer, Leeds United parted ways with academy graduate Archie Gray, who joined Tottenham Hotspur after they activated his £40 million release clause. The move came after Gray’s breakout season in the 2023/24 Championship campaign, during which he established himself as a key figure despite it being his first professional year.

His exit was a significant setback for Leeds, especially as they also saw the departures of Crysencio Summerville and Georginio Rutter. The club was once again forced into a rebuild ahead of the new season.

While Leeds suffered heartbreak at Wembley a year ago, they bounced back by winning the Championship title this season. Meanwhile, Gray enjoyed a stellar debut campaign with Spurs, culminating in a Europa League triumph. Next season, he will return to Elland Road as a Champions League player.

Gray Reflects on a Breakthrough Season at Spurs

The 19-year-old has earned praise for his versatility under manager Ange Postecoglou, having featured in a range of roles including central and defensive midfield, right-back, and even centre-back. Following the Europa League final, Gray acknowledged the vital role Leeds played in shaping his adaptability and development.

Speaking to Sky Sports, he shared:
“100%. For the fans, for everyone, it’s been a season that’s definitely been worth it. I’ve loved every minute of it. I’ve learned so much and gained experiences I never expected. I’m grateful to the manager for trusting me in different positions — every one of them has taught me something.”

Gray also credited Leeds’ academy for preparing him to handle such versatility:
“Leeds made sure we were exposed to every position on the pitch. That helped give me a strong foundation, so I’m never stepping into unfamiliar territory. Wherever I’m put, I’ll always give 100% — that’s something Leeds instills in all their young players.”

A Promising Future Ahead

Gray’s numbers underline his impact. He featured in 46 of Spurs’ 60 matches across all competitions this season, starting 35 times — often stepping up amid injury challenges. His reliability and flexibility have earned him recognition, and some Spurs supporters have even suggested a short-term loan return to Leeds. However, if he remains in North London, he will be facing his boyhood club in the Premier League next season.

Here’s a look at his career stats so far:

Team Appearances Goals Assists Yellow Cards

Leeds United 52 0 2 2
Tottenham 46 0 0 2
England U21 10 1 1 1

Although Gray has proven effective across various roles, his long-term future likely lies in central midfield — the position where he excelled during his youth days at Leeds. With just two more senior appearances needed to reach the 100-mark, Gray’s journey is only just beginning — and his Leeds roots remain a strong part of his football identity.
