“West Ham’s underperforming star set for exit as Lopetegui loses patience after Wolves debacle.”

July 28, 2024

West Ham’s dismal 3-1 defeat to Wolves in Jacksonville, Florida, has left manager Julen Lopetegui with some tough decisions to make. The Spaniard was visibly frustrated with his team’s performance, and rightly so.

Lopetegui stated after the match that every player needs to improve significantly over the next three weeks to be ready for the new season. While it was only a pre-season friendly, the lethargic display was concerning, with many players looking far off the pace compared to Wolves.

One player who particularly disappointed was Maxwel Cornet. His performance was described as “utterly awful” and could lead to his exit from the club. Cornet has been linked with a move away from West Ham before, and his recent displays have done little to convince Lopetegui of his worth.

The 27-year-old’s lack of tracking back, lightweight challenges, and failure to offer an outlet for his defenders made him stand out as the worst player on the pitch. His injury at the end of 2022 seems to have taken a toll on him, both physically and mentally.

Lopetegui needs to be ruthless and consider moving Cornet on. It would send a strong message to the rest of the underperforming squad and allow the manager to bring in fresh talent. With Chelsea putting 12 players up for sale, including four West Ham targets, Lopetegui has a chance to revamp his team and make a statement.
