Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi has acknowledged a below-par performance against Leicester City, conceding that he “needs to do better” after a testing afternoon.
The 24-year-old England international struggled to contain Jamie Vardy’s pace and was also caught out by James Justin’s cross in the build-up to Stephy Mavididi’s goal. Despite Palace’s late resurgence to secure a 2-2 draw, Guehi acknowledged his own shortcomings.
“A bit of concentration for us, especially myself,” Guehi reflected. “I think I can do a lot better. I need to do a lot better in helping the team and doing my job a little bit better…I like to put a lot of pressure on myself, so I need to do better.”
Guehi’s candid assessment comes after a tumultuous summer transfer window, where Newcastle United’s protracted pursuit of the centre-back ultimately ended in failure. Palace chairman Steve Parish’s reported £70m valuation proved a stumbling block, with the Magpies unwilling to meet the Eagles’ demands.
Parish had previously hailed Guehi as a “generational talent” and sought “superstar money” for the defender, who has less than two years remaining on his contract. However, Newcastle’s interest waned as Palace’s asking price exceeded their valuation.
While the door remains open for a potential reunion in 2025, Palace will likely need to reassess their valuation, considering Guehi’s contract will have even less time remaining.
In a recent interview, Parish stated that Palace “want to be selling to clubs like Newcastle who have got great aspirations.” However, the chairman’s gamble may have backfired, with Guehi’s form and market value potentially diminishing as a result.
Newcastle’s Transfer Strategy Under Scrutiny
Newcastle United’s hierarchy has faced criticism for their handling of the Guehi transfer saga. The club’s reluctance to meet Palace’s valuation has sparked debate among fans and pundits alike.
Some argue that Newcastle’s cautious approach was justified, given Guehi’s contract situation and Palace’s inflated asking price. Others believe the Magpies missed an opportunity to secure a top-class defender.
As the January transfer window approaches, Newcastle’s transfer strategy will come under intense scrutiny. Will they revisit their interest in Guehi, or explore alternative options to bolster their defensive ranks?
Guehi’s Form a Concern for Palace
Guehi’s inconsistent form has raised concerns among Palace fans. The struggles against Leicester City were evident, and his partnership with Joachim Andersen is still a work in progress.
Palace manager Oliver Glasner will be eager to see Guehi regain his confidence and form, particularly with the Eagles facing a challenging run of fixtures in the coming weeks.
The Future Uncertain
As the dust settles on the summer transfer window, Guehi’s future remains uncertain. Will he remain at Palace, or will Newcastle United revive their interest?
One thing is clear: Guehi’s performances will be under intense scrutiny in the coming months. Can he rediscover his form and justify Parish’s “generational talent” tag?
Only time will tell.
