Tottenham plot shock move for £40m Marcus Rashford

The Man Utd star is willing to take a huge pay cut to secure the next step in his career

Tottenham Hotspur have set their sights on Marcus Rashford as their next summer signing, continuing their aggressive spending spree.

After securing Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton for £52m last week and launching an £80m bid for Sandro Tonali—turned down by Newcastle—Spurs are showing clear intent.

The club is prioritizing proven Premier League talent over less experienced overseas prospects, and Rashford fits that criteria perfectly. Coming off a strong World Cup campaign and with a manageable price tag, he’s an appealing option.

According to The i Paper, Tottenham are reluctant to trigger the £40m release clause agreed between Manchester United and Rashford—originally tied to Aston Villa’s loan-to-buy deal—but are considering a lower bid.

At present, Rashford would prefer a move abroad, ideally back to Barcelona or to Bayern Munich, both of whom are tracking the 28-year-old. Returning to United to reignite his childhood connection is also on the table, while a switch to another Premier League side isn’t currently in his plans.

Still, United’s eagerness to offload him and shed his high wages may force Rashford to rethink his stance. Club sources insist they won’t negotiate another loan with Barcelona after the Spanish club declined to make his previous loan permanent for £26m.

Were it not for his salary, demand for Rashford—who revived his career at Barca—would be high. Spurs boss Roberto De Zerbi is a known admirer and is expected to urge the board to strike a deal.

Rashford is prepared to take a significant pay cut for the right move at this pivotal stage in his career. United, meanwhile, are gearing up for a busy summer and would use any sale proceeds to strengthen other areas.

A move for Atalanta’s Ederson is seen as imminent, with World Cup logistics causing delays. Talks continue with West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes, though the asking price is giving United pause.

Elliot Anderson remains their top target, but a potential record-breaking transfer to Manchester City is gaining traction.

United are also chasing West Ham’s Crysencio Summerville, who impressed for the Netherlands in their 6-0 World Cup win over Sweden, as they look to add another winger.

United’s hierarchy are determined to stay disciplined in the market, ready to pivot if prices exceed their limits.

Spurs, by contrast, appear more willing to open their wallets. If they can agree on a wage structure, Rashford could prove a savvy investment.
