Tottenham considering hijacking Real Betis move for £13m MLS striker

Tottenham Hotspur have been heavily linked with a summer move for former Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood, but sources indicate he is not on their radar as they pursue other attacking targets.

Greenwood previously worked with Spurs head coach Roberto De Zerbi during their time together at Marseille, and a report from L’Équipe suggested the North London club were preparing to make an approach for the one-time England international.

De Zerbi’s appointment at Tottenham in March was met with backlash due to past remarks and his association with Greenwood, who in 2022 faced charges of attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm—all of which were later dropped.

The Crown Prosecution Service discontinued the case in February 2023, citing the withdrawal of key witnesses and new evidence that made conviction unlikely.

Greenwood, who denied the allegations, later resumed his playing career, leaving United permanently for Marseille in 2024 under De Zerbi.

Upon taking over at Tottenham, De Zerbi apologised for any offence caused by earlier comments in which he described Greenwood as a “good guy” who had paid a “heavy price”—remarks that had drawn criticism from three supporters’ groups opposed to his hiring.

Despite a rocky start, De Zerbi steadied the ship and guided Spurs to Premier League safety, winning three of his seven matches in charge. A dramatic final-day victory over Everton secured survival and bought him considerable goodwill heading into the summer window.

Tottenham have already moved quickly since narrowly avoiding relegation, bringing in free agents Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi, while also finalising a £52 million deal for Brighton centre-back Jan Paul van Hecke. Greenwood, however, will not be joining that incoming group.

That does not mean Spurs are neglecting their attack—a new centre-forward is expected to arrive before the window closes.

Spurs eye MLS standout

According to Spanish reports relayed by Sport Witness, Real Betis are now under pressure from Tottenham in the race for FC Cincinnati striker Kévin Denkey.

Betis have been working on a deal for the 25-year-old and consider him their primary target, with Cincinnati reportedly asking for just €15 million (£13 million) this summer.

Denkey boasts an impressive goalscoring record: 66 goals in 152 appearances for Cercle Brugge before moving to MLS, where he has since netted 31 times in 51 games.

Betis view the Togo international as a potential “top-class striker,” but with Spurs now scouting him and easily capable of matching the £13 million fee, the La Liga side are growing concerned.

Tottenham may see a low-cost striker as a pragmatic solution while deciding the futures of Richarlison and Dominic Solanke, and it would also free up funds to make a significant investment in Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali to bolster their engine room. Tonali’s representatives provided an update on his future earlier this week.
