Pual Merson Throws Doubts on Kiteishvili’s Premier League Prospects
Former Arsenal player and pundit Pual Merson has expressed skepticism about Otar Kiteishvili’s ability to adapt to the Premier League, should Sunderland succeed in signing the Sturm Graz star.
“I don’t think Kiteishvili is the player they need,” Merson said. “He’s a small player, and the Premier League is a physical league. You need players who can handle the pace and power of the game here. Kiteishvili’s slight frame might make it difficult for him to cope with the physicality of the Premier League.”
Merson questioned Kiteishvili’s ability to cope with the intense pressure and physicality of the Premier League, citing his playing style as potentially unsuitable for the English top flight. “He’s a creative player, but the Premier League is a different beast. You need players who can take a knock and get back up, not just players who can create chances.”
Merson’s comments will likely fuel the debate about Kiteishvili’s potential suitability for the Premier League, and whether Sunderland’s style of play can accommodate his skills. “Sunderland needs players who can make an impact, not just nice players,” Merson added. “If Kiteishvili can’t handle the Premier League’s physicality, he’ll struggle to make a difference.”
While Kiteishvili has impressed in the Austrian Bundesliga, Merson believes that the step up to the Premier League is a significant one. “It’s a big jump from the Austrian league to the Premier League,” Merson said. “You need players who can adapt quickly and handle the pressure. I’m not convinced Kiteishvili has what it takes.”
