Roy Keane Targets Rangers in Unexpected Rant
Roy Keane has launched into a surprising and fiery tirade aimed at Rangers, criticizing the Scottish side during a recent outburst.
Rangers have endured a tough campaign at Ibrox, struggling to maintain consistent performances in the Scottish Premiership. Both Philippe Clement and Barry Ferguson have failed to keep pace with Old Firm rivals Celtic, who have comfortably secured another league title.
Keane, a former Celtic midfielder, took an unexpected jab at the Govan club while speaking on the Stick to Football podcast (8 May), with his comments seemingly coming out of nowhere.
Rangers Criticized Amid Europa League Campaign
Despite their domestic struggles, Rangers impressed in the Europa League, notably defeating Jose Mourinho’s Fenerbahce on penalties after a 3-3 aggregate draw. That win set up a high-stakes quarter-final against Athletic Bilbao.
Although Rangers pushed Bilbao to the limit, the Spanish side advanced to the semi-finals, where they suffered a 3-0 defeat to Manchester United in the first leg at San Mames.
When Jill Scott suggested that Bilbao could still make a comeback at Old Trafford, Keane responded with disbelief, dragging Rangers into the discussion:
“Bilbao just about beat Rangers, Rangers are about 300 points behind Celtic. My goodness.”
Dismissive Comments Draw Criticism
Keane’s remarks appeared to downplay both Bilbao’s achievement and Rangers’ impressive European campaign. The Light Blues had performed well in the Europa League, securing notable results against the likes of Nice and Tottenham, while Manchester United only narrowly edged them out at Old Trafford.
By using Rangers’ performance as a measure to undermine Bilbao, Keane arguably disrespected both teams. All eyes will now be on how Athletic Club fare in the second leg against United—and whether they can silence the criticism.
