Troy Deeney says Wolves have an ‘excellent footballer’ who’d be even harder to replace than Matheus Cunha

Wolves took a huge step towards Premier League safety on Saturday – and Troy Deeney as left blown away by one Wanderers star.

Wolves are now 12 points clear of the relegation zone, after recorded their most significant result of the season.

The visitors won 2-1 at Portman Road, coming from behind thanks to goals from Pablo Sarabia and Jorgen Strand Larsen.

Ipswich had the chance to close the gap to six points, and looked like they might do that when they took the lead through Liam Delap.

But Wolves showed great character to win the game.

Strand Larsen has made a lot of headlines for scoring his fourth goal in three games.

But for Troy Deeney, there is little doubt as to who Wolves player really was against Ipswich.

Troy Deeney hails Joao Gomes after Wolves beat Ipswich

What a week it was for Joao Gomes.

Gomes signed a new contract with Wolves last Tuesday, in a development that took some by surprise.

He then shone in Wolves’ 1-0 win over West Ham United that night.

Gomes was back starting once again against Ipswich, and really impressed once more in midfield for Wanderers – and Deeney reckons he was easily the best player on the park.

Selecting the Wolves ace for his latest Premier League Team of the Week for BBC Sport, he said: “He was the best player on the pitch by a country mile. Wolves might be worried about losing Matheus Cunha but in my opinion Gomes is the one they need to watch, and will be the harder one to replace.

“Excellent footballer, took over the game in the second half when they were 1-0 down. Just said ‘don’t worry guys give me the ball, watch what I can do’.”

Data showed Gomes had a strong outing against Ipswich, especially on the ball, with the star completing 45/51 passes.

Joao Gomes highly unlikely to leave Wolves this summer after signing new contract

Thankfully for Wolves, it is highly unlikely that he leaves the club this summer.

One of the key aspects of him signing that new deal at Molineux was that it does not contain a release clause, unlike Cunha’s.

That means Wolves are free to demand ridiculous money, and set an asking price that will deter other clubs.

That is a serious boost for Wolves, with Gomes having blossomed into one of the Premier League’s best midfielders.
