There wasn’t much for Celtic fans to celebrate over the weekend.
Yes, they remain on course to clinch the Premiership title—and perhaps even secure a Treble—but Brendan Rodgers has some major decisions looming this summer.
Premiership Table:
1. Celtic – 32 games, 25 wins, 3 draws, 4 losses, +47 goal difference, 78 points
2. Rangers – 32 games, 20 wins, 5 draws, 7 losses, +36 goal difference, 65 points
3. Hibernian – 32 games, 13 wins, 11 draws, 8 losses, +9 goal difference, 50 points
4. Aberdeen – 32 games, 14 wins, 7 draws, 11 losses, -4 goal difference, 49 points
Some performances in 2025 have raised eyebrows, not least Celtic’s 1-0 loss to bottom-of-the-table St Johnstone on Sunday.
Few players emerged with credit, as several find themselves under scrutiny and feeling the heat from their manager.
What unfolds during the summer transfer window will be telling—Rodgers may well make sweeping changes.
Amid the concerns, though, one standout has been Viljami Sinisalo. Signed from Aston Villa last summer, the Finnish goalkeeper has quietly impressed.
Viljami Sinisalo: A Shrewd Addition
In an otherwise bleak outing against St Johnstone, Sinisalo was a bright spot. Making just his third appearance for the club, the young backup has shown real potential.
With Kasper Schmeichel sidelined by injury, Sinisalo has stepped up admirably—something that hasn’t gone unnoticed. Former Scotland international James McFadden praised Celtic’s foresight in bringing him in.
Speaking to Sky Sports, McFadden called Sinisalo’s signing a “smart move.”
“They signed an experienced keeper and a younger one who could learn not just by playing, but from working alongside a top professional like Kasper Schmeichel,” McFadden said.
“You need to be ready when the chance comes. Sinisalo is an international, so he’s not some inexperienced youngster being thrown in. It’s a great opportunity for him.
“Goalkeeping is a unique position—often, your chance comes due to an injury or a dip in form. You might only get one game to prove yourself. If you slip up, it sticks with you. But Sinisalo now has a run of games where he can settle and perform.”
A Bonus for Celtic
Thankfully for Celtic, Schmeichel’s injury isn’t as severe as first feared. But if he doesn’t recover in time, Sinisalo is set to feature not just in the semi-finals of the Scottish Cup, but potentially the final as well—should Celtic get past St Johnstone.
McFadden believes this run of games is hugely beneficial for the young shot-stopper’s development.
“It’s a big bonus for Celtic to have a young goalkeeper they’re investing in long-term,” he added. “These are crucial matches—ones that can win titles and trophies—and they’re invaluable for Sinisalo’s growth as he pushes to be the club’s future number one.”
