Wolves have the chance to bring in new faces this summer when the transfer window opens for business. They also have the opportunity to let some players head out the exit door as well to help free up space and funds in their ranks.
Vitor Pereira was picked as their replacement for Gary O’Neil earlier this season. He has since steadied the ship as he looks to keep the Midlands outfit in the Premier League.
They are currently sat in 17th place in the table and are back in action after the international break. Southampton, Leicester City and Ipswich Town sit below them in the drop zone.
Wolves defender Santiago Bueno on future
Wolves defender Santiago Bueno has said he is open to a return to Penarol in the future. He started his career there before moving over to Europe to join Barcelona as a youngster to pursue his career.
He has told ESPN: “I don’t regret the path I took; these are decisions you make under different circumstances.”
Regarding a potential return, he said: “Yes, of course. It’s a topic of conversation, for example, in the national team when we team up with Fede Valverde or Darwin, players with whom we played together in Peñarol’s youth system and who left at a young age. There’s always that topic of conversation, that possible reunion, which would also be very nice.”
Bueno, 26, was snapped up by Wolves in 2023 for a fee of £12million after catching the eye at Girona in La Liga. He has since made 44 appearances in all competitions for his current team, 22 of which have come in this campaign.
When asked about his Uruguay international duties, he explained: “In his first call-up, for two friendlies in June, I had finished the 2022/23 season injured in Girona and was recovering in Spain. They gave me a few days off because it was the summer vacation, so I went to Uruguay, and he contacted me because he wanted to meet me and explain his way of working and what they thought of me.
“I went to the complex and we had a nearly two-hour talk where he had a lot of clippings of my plays, things I did well and things I need to improve. It had a big impact on me, and for the better, because he had a lot of information about me, things that even you don’t see sometimes and that help you become a better footballer.”
Wolves are nine points above the bottom three and have managed to build a healthy gap now which is good news for them. They have nine fixtures left to play this term as they look to achieve their goal of survival.
They won 2-1 away at Southampton in their last game in what was a valuable three points in their quest to avoid Championship football. Striker Jorgen Strand Larsen scored twice as they managed to hold on for a big victory.
Speaking after the win, Pereira said: “It’s a fantastic result for us. I suffered a little bit in the last 10 minutes because we had chances to score the third goal twice, and I believe with the third goal, we would have had more tranquillity to play, to keep the ball, to make the pace of the game with the ball, to control the game with the ball.”
Wolves face West Ham at home on 1st April in their next outing as they look to build some momentum. They then lock horns with Ipswich away on 5th April.
