Leeds United Secure Historic Community Sports Ground to Preserve Local Football
Leeds United have long been at the heart of their city, with the club and its passionate supporters forming an inseparable bond. The latest development reinforces that connection, as the club moves to safeguard an important part of the local footballing landscape.
Under the leadership of Paraag Marathe, Leeds United have successfully had their bid accepted for a key community sports ground—an acquisition that could play a major role in ensuring its long-term survival.
Leeds MP Welcomes Bid Approval
In 2022, during Andrea Radrizzani’s tenure, Leeds United placed a £50,000 bid to acquire the TV Harrison Sports Ground in Wortley from the Leeds Schools Sports Association (LSSA).
Now, as confirmed by Farnley & Wortley MP Mark Sewards on Facebook (19 March), the LSSA has officially accepted the offer. This means Leeds United will secure ownership for the next 250 years, providing lasting protection for the venue—fondly known as ‘Wortley’s Wembley’.
Previously, there were plans to develop housing on the site, but this agreement safeguards the ground for sporting use, ensuring it remains a vital space for the local community. Leeds United will now consult with nearby residents to ensure the agreement aligns with their interests and needs.
As per Assets of Community Value regulations, there is now a six-week period during which any other party can submit a matching bid.
Marathe and 49ers Back Crucial Community Project
The Yorkshire Evening Post (20 March) highlights that ‘Wortley’s Wembley’ has historical significance, having been the starting ground for Leeds legends such as Brian Deane and David Batty.
Leeds United has a rich history of nurturing homegrown talent, with Thorp Arch Academy playing a crucial role in recent years. Preserving grassroots football venues like this one is essential for the continued development of young players, and it is encouraging to see Marathe and the club’s leadership investing in the local game.
Leeds United & LSSA: A Timeline of the Deal

The deal is expected to be well received by the local community, particularly families keen on sporting opportunities for their children. Additionally, with no new housing developments planned for the site, nearby homeowners could see their property values remain stable or even rise.
MP Mark Sewards will continue working closely on the project, though Leeds United have yet to comment officially until the agreement is fully finalized.
